When impossible to overcome, cross-foster within 24 and 48 hours after birth

Inherent to higher number of live born piglets, is cross-fostering of piglets. However, this is not ideal as we are also inducing stress and spreading diseases. Visualizing the spread of pathogens is easily done with comparing it with red paint. By mixing animals this red paint will spread out over all animals quickly. Cross-fostering is an important infection route for diarrhea in the farrowing crate, and will also increase the risk for post-weaning influenza.
