Calves
Concentrates or starter feeds are fed from day 4 after birth. The purpose of feeding a concentrate is to stimulate the rumen development as soon as possible. As a calf is from birth on a monogastric. In the beginning the abomasium is only functional and the complete rumen needs to be developed. For the development of the rumen the starter feed or concentrates are extremely important especially non structural carbohydrates which create a strong and well developed rumen and rumen wall with long papillae.
