Piglets
Milk replacers for piglets can be an excellent management tool to help you wean those `too large` litters, or supports the piglets when artificial weaned. A milk replacer for piglets is especially designed to meet the requirements of piglets that are still fully milk dependent. This means that a piglet from birth until approximately 14 –21 days has problems with digesting large amounts vegetable proteins. Also is in the beginning the intake of energy very important.
Milk replacers provide the piglet the energy that is necessary due to the dairy ingredients that are rich in lactose. Lactose is an excellent and the energy source for the piglet. From birth till 3-4 weeks the piglet is capable of digesting the lactose due to the presence of the enzyme lactase. Besides the necessary energy the piglet is also provided with the dairy protein coming from the milk replacer making sure that the piglet is taking in all the nutrients she requires even when the sow is not producing enough milk or the piglets need to be artificially weaned due to large litters or too much body weight of the sow.
Test results show that by feeding liquid the total amount of dry matter intake is large compared with feeding only solid feed. A high intake of dry matter means also a better development of the digestion tract and intestine villi. There is a direct correlation of dry matter intake and villi length. When the absorption surface and the intestine villi is in good conditions diarrhoea problems do occur less. From this point of view feeding a milk replacer is not only helping you as an management tool in the farrowing pen but also maximizes the growth potential and minimize piglet scouring.
